Nearly twenty-five thousand households in southeastern Queensland were left without power on Monday's dawn after severe thunderstorms impacted the state, bringing strong winds hitting over 100 km/h.

Massive Frozen Precipitation and Widespread Damage

Locals reported large ice chunks as large as 7cm in particular locations. Weather authorities confirmed that various areas across Queensland had been affected by substantial ice precipitation.

Utility workers were working to restore electricity service throughout the impacted areas, with dozens of response units deployed to address the extensive power failures.

Southern State's Weather Woes

At the same time, approximately 1,000 energy customers in the southern state also experienced energy failures after the metropolitan area saw its heaviest rainfall in over 500 days.

State Emergency Services received over five hundred calls for help across the area, mostly for building damage but also for fallen timber and flooding.

• Werribee - experienced substantial destruction
• Hoppers Crossing - various rescue reports
• Wyndham area - 179 emergency requests

During the peak on the previous day, more than twenty-eight thousand power users in the state were experiencing outages.

Meteorological Predictions

Humid circumstances were forecast to persist along significant areas of eastern Queensland this next several days as a low-pressure trough continued to pull in damp air against the shoreline.

Tomorrow was forecast to be the most rainy day, with ongoing severe weather risk anticipated across different parts of both regions.

Health Warning

Public health experts alerted that there was an higher risk of epidemic thunderstorm asthma across the countryside regions, especially given the current weather patterns.

This alert comes after past events where comparable situations led to substantial respiratory problems in the state.
