The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
